Asmat flute, 20th Century Ex Dutch Collection , Ex Belgian Collection.

The Asmat people of southwest New Guinea create fu, distinctive trumpets made from thick sections of bamboo. Used primarily as signaling devices, the trumpets were associated with warfare. Blown prior to a raid, to scare enemies and rendering them immobile and then again upon return to the warriors' village to signal their victory and safe return. They were also played during male initiations and to accompany some drum performances. Though warfare mainly ceased during the 20th Century, the Asmat still continued to use them for signalling purpose. Featuring 2 stylised human figures more than likely representing spirits or ancestor figures.
