A Large Boiken Platter, Papua New Guinea

A beautiful rare Boiken platter featuring two beautifully figurative carvings in the recognisable shape of a Cockatoo and a carved circular curvilinear motif. Lovely worn patina . D48cm. Most bird like carvings found on such bowls were in abstract form. Given the rarity of such a complete design, it is likely this bowl was used in a ritual manner rather than merely being a utilitarian bowl for preparing and serving of food.
