Middle Sepik Suspension Hook, Iatmul - Early 20th Century

Featuring a Janus head representing ancestral spirits important to the clan.Suspension hooks were hung from the rafters by a cord, used to protect food, clothing, and other items, which are placed in baskets or string bags and hung from the hook-shaped prongs at the base to keep them out of reach of vermin.
