A fine Banks Islands spear, 19th Century
A lovely worn old throwing or thrusting Spear with a hardwood tip set in a bamboo shaft. The tip features two extremely worn Janus Ancestor faces and a sennet handle to ensure grip. A beautiful soft patina. Given the wear and soft smooth patina I believe this a wonderful 19th / Early 20th Century example.
Interestingly as a side note, Felix Speiser mentions in his book ‘ Ethnology of Vanuatu’ that a spear may have been brought from the Banks Islands to Malekula Island where the referenced spear given by Phillippe Francois was discovered. It seems that exchanges were made in the past either as trade or taken in battle.
