Stone carved Suspension Hook, Sawos People.

Late 19th Century/ Early 20th Century Stone carved Suspension Hook, L74cm,feauturing an anthromorphic ancestor figure with a scarification on belly. The eyes feature inserted seeds (lacryma jobi ) resembling the eyeball. The Sawos people of the Middle Sepik River region of New Guinea are divided into a number of clans, each of which is associated with specific ancestors and totemic species.
